Death, coming with all the swiftness and suddenness conceivable, visited one of our well known citizens Thursday morning and without a moments warning, Zach Choate, for many years a resident of this vicinity and well known to a great number of people, laid down his shovel and died in the gravel pit on the old Gore farm just north of the city. Mr. Choate had been afflicted with heart spells for some time back, but had managed to keep up and at work. Thursday morning he went to work as usual and shortly after finishing the loading of the first wagon with gravel, he dropped his shovel, exclaimed “Oh, boys”, to the men who were working with him and sank to the ground. Bert Costle, who was nearest to Mr. Choate, hastened to him and raised him up a little, but life was extinct and nothing could be done. Justice Reed was called and he decided that death had been caused by natural causes and no inquest was necessary. Mr. Choate’s obituary is as follows: Zach Choate was born in Canada, January 24, 1854, coming to the states at the age of eleven months, passing away Sept. 13, 1923. August 25, 1876 he was married to Carrie Seeley, to which union two children were born, one daughter, having passed away years ago. He leaves a wife, one daughter, Mrs. Edna Boyd of Belding, and one grandson, Forest Boyd, of Detroit. Two sisters, Mrs. Maria Anderson, of Grand Rapids, and Mrs. Jim Meginley of the city; two brothers Chris Choate of this city and John Choate, of Tustin; also several nieces and nephews and other relatives and many friends. The funeral was held from his late home on Pleasant street last Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. Rev. H.E. Curch officiated and burial was in Smyrna cemetery.
