A. F. Choate, former pastor of the Clare Baptist church, passed away in Sheyenne, North Dakota, last Thursday afternoon. For some time, Mr. Choate’s health has been very poor, but never could be induced to give up his work, until last fall. At that time he came with his wife to the home of their daughter, Mrs. Harry James of Port Huron, after which his health steadily improved. Impatient to be back at work he persisted in returning to Dakota, but persuaded his wife to remain in Michigan until spring. Feb. 11th a telegram was received by his wife which bade her come at once. She with her son H. W. Choate of Clio went with all possible speed to the bedside of the patient sufferer, but ‘twas too late. For two hours before their arrival he had passed away. Two days before his death he became unconscious and remained so until the end. His remains were brought to Clare Wednesday and interred in Cherry Grove cemetery. A F. Choate was born March 24, 1845 in London Ont. On Dec 30th 1866 he was united in marriage with his present wife. To this union four children were born, Mrs. Harry James, Port Huron; C. B. Choate, Toledo, Ohio; H. W. Choate of Clio; and a daughter at Bear Lake all of whom with their mother survive. His boyhood home was near Smyrna, Mich. until he enlisted with the Engineer and Mechanics being in service over two years, during this time he was with Sherman on the march to the sea. He has been engaged in the ministry for the past thirty years, and the past two years he has had charge of the Baptist churches at Sheyenne and New Rockford, North Dakota. Besides his family he leaves one brother C. N. Choate, Woodstock, Canada. Mrs. Carrie Madison of Cando, N. Dakota, Mrs. Sarah Magher, Hersey and Mrs. Orin Purdy of Orleans. Mr. and Mrs. Purdy attended the funeral Feb. 22nd. The deceased will be remembered by the old residents here.
