He was born on Oct. 31, 1924, in Iona, the son of Benjamin and Ethel (Kaiser) Christopher. Mr. Christopher was a lifelong resident of Ionia and graduated from Ionia High School in 1942 and was very involved in football and track. He attended Grand Rapids Business College and graduated from Lansing Business College. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and served in many capacities. He was a former member of the Ionia Kiwanis Club, the Jaycees, and the Ionia Historical and Theatre Boards. Fred was a Cost Engineer for General Time in Ionia before retiring in 1986, and also worked in the Treasurer’s Office for the Ionia Free Fair for 50 years. After his retirement, he was a tax consultant for AARP. He was a 30 year retiree of the United States Air Force and was a member of the 87th Squadron of the 438 Troop Carrier Group – first over Normandy, and was also a member of the Ionia VFW Post #224. His parents preceded him in death. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Margaret A. Christopher of Ionia; children, Sharon (Jack) Unger of Bellaire, Patricia Fox, of Ionia, and Linda (David) May of Hammonton, NJ; grandsons, Christopher Fox, Jason Jackson and Patrick Christopher; great-granddaughter, Miranda Jackson; sister, Betty Fox of Flint; half-brother, Harold Christopher of Dunkirk, Ohio; and special friend of the family Steve Beamesderfer. The funeral service will be conducted by the Rev. Martin Culver, Pastor at 11 a.m., Friday at the First United Methodist Church, Ionia. Interment will take place later at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Ionia. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday at the Cook Funeral Home, 220 Rich St., Ionia and 10 a.m. until service time on Friday at the Church. Per the family’s wishes, there will be no visitation on Thanksgiving Day.
