(Lafler) Church, 81, of Ionia, passed away Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001 at Heartland Health Care Center in Ionia. Neva P. Schaffer was born May 15, 1919, in Middleton, the daughter of John and Hazel (Hendricks) Schaffer. She grew up and attended Dobson School in Middleton area, moving to the Ionia area when she was 17. Neva was married to Karl Lafler in September 1936 and he preceded her in death May 16, 1964. She married Glenn Church in September 1966 and he preceded her in death April 18, 1980. Neva liked to cook, bake, crochet and she loved windmills and barns. She worked at the Vogue Shop and in the cafeteria at the high school in Ionia for several years, but she mostly did what she always did best—being a mom. …(portion missing)…(Toni) Lafler of Ionia, Lynn (Sharon) Lafler of Ionia and Blaine (Nancy) Lafler of Alma; one daughter, Susan (James) Carmody of Cadillac; four stepsons, Vearl (Pat) Church of Pleasant Lake, Gordon (Joan) Church of Florida, Larry (Henry) Church of Florida and Tom (Delores) Church of Florida; one stepdaughter, Virginia (Ron) Shallow of Fenwick; 29 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Leota Flowers of Greenville; several nieces and nephews; and her special friends at Pine Vista. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Karl Lafler and Glenn Church; her parents; one son, Karlyle Lafler; and two brothers, Karl and Max Schaffer. Visiting hours for Mrs. Neva P. (Lafler) Church will be 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and again from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cook Funeral Home, Rich Street Chapel, Ionia. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday from the Cook Funeral Home with Pastor Kenneth Harger of Shiloh Community Church officiating. Interment will be in Easton Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ionia Area Hospice. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
