Churchill was born at Leraysville, Jefferson County, New York, February 19, 1843 and at the age of 18 enlisted in Co. A, 35th Regiment of New York June 11, 1861, being honorably discharged June 5, 1863. He also had five brothers who were in the service. On January 28, 1864 he was united in marriage to Phebe A. Gardner at Antwerp, New York. To this union two children were born, one dying in infancy, the other, Grace Marion of Hubbardston. He came to Michigan September 12, 1865 shortly after taking up residence in Hubbardston, where he has since resided. After residing here 13 years he had the misfortune to lose his wife. February 25, 1879 he was united in marriage to Dora E. Losey, who with his daughter, a step-son, Clio S. Losey of Howell, two grandsons, three brothers and one sister survive him. He has always been an active worker, having held several prominent offices, among them being justice of the peace for 16 years. He was a member of O. H. Reed Post, No. 243, a member of Tuscan lodge No. 178, also Tuscan chapter O.E.S. No. 139. After an illness of seven weeks he departed this life at his residence August 13, 1916 at the age of 73 years. The funeral was held at his home August 16, at 2 o’clock, Rev. Phillips officiating. After the services the Masons took charge of the burial, performing their ceremony and he was laid to rest in the west side cemetery.
