Clark was born in Norfolk, Eng., July 31, 1833, and with his parents sailed to Dundass, Canada. He was married Oct. 12, 1852, to Miss Labina Chandler. The settled in St. Johns, Mich., where Mrs. Clark died in 1865. In 1868 he was married to Miss Angeline Dean of Ionia, Mich. To this union were born four children, the three surviving ones being Mrs. Minnie Densmore of Orange, Mrs. Sarah Chapin of Bellevue, and Wm., Jr., of Nashville, Mich. Two brothers also are left, – Wesley and Thomas Clark of Canada. Under the teachings of the regular Baptists he became a Christian at the age of thirty years, and afterwards joined the M.E. church of Ionia. On moving to Orange Twp., he joined the Wesleyan Methodist church. The family settled in East Odessa, where Brother and Sister Clark succeeded in clearing from the forest a comfortable home, where they resided twenty-five years. In course of time a neat little church building was erected by the church of their choice, within one-half mile of their home, which has ever had their hearty support. Death broke into this home Feb. 3, 1903, and took the wife and mother. Bro. Clark clung to the old home, however, for one year and a half, and then yielding to urgent solicitations, came to reside with his daughter, Mrs. Densmore of Orange, where he has been very tenderly cared for since Oct. 1, 1904. He was a great sufferer from rheumatism, the last two months of his life being spent in almost constant pain, yet not a murmur escaped him and when visited by his friends would invariably speak of the “peace within.” In the early evening hours of March 28, 1905, his sufferings ceased and his soul rested in the Lord, whom he had so faithfully served. On March 31, his funeral was held at the East Odessa church and the remains were laid to rest by the side of those of his wife, in the beautiful cemetery at Lake Odessa, the writer officiating. He was a kind husband and father, a good neighbor and a dutiful citizen, whose death is sincerely mourned by a large circle of near friends and the community generally. A. A. Alverson.
