Ionia Sentinel, 12 Jul 1872

Fatal Accident. – On the 3d inst., William C. Clark, an old gentleman of sixty-
eight years of age, met with an accident from the effects of which he died on 
Tuesday.  In harnessing his horse he neglected to snap the hold backs into the 
rings, and in descending a hill on his way to a neighbor’s house, the wagon 
struck the horse, and it started to run.  Fearing that he would be thrown from 
the bridge into the ravine below, Mr. Clark attempted to jump from the wagon; 
but caught his foot in the side spring, throwing him upon his shoulder, 
breaking the shoulder blade, several ribs, and puncturing the lungs.  He was 
carried to his house, only a few rods from where the accident occurred, and 
medical assistance immediately summoned, but his advanced age, and the severe 
nature of his injuries, dissipated any hopes of his recovery.  Mr. Clark was 
born in the town of Sherburn, Chenango county, N.Y., on the 31st of December 
1804.  While a young man, he removed to Onondaga county, where he married his 
first wife, Abigail Betts.  In 1828 he removed to Knowsville, Orleans county, 
and remained until 1837, and then made his home at Wilson, Niagara county.  
Here he resided until March, 1837, when he emigrated to Michigan, locating at 
Pontiac.  In 1845 he came to Ionia and engaged in the foundry business.  In 
1860 he turned his attention to farming, which he has followed ever since.  Mr. 
C. was one of the pioneers of the county, was an industrious man and highly 
esteemed as an upright and honorable citizen.
