Clark, son of Mrs. Sarah Clark, 113 N. Depot street, died Monday evening, as the result of the accidental swallowing of carbolic acid, undiluted, or with very little water added. He had bee in the habit of using carbolic acid for a gargle, and had a two-ounce bottle of the acid in his room for that purpose. He went upstairs at about 7:30, and, without turning on the light, got out the bottle and made his solution. Apparently working in the dark deceived his judgment; the acid was almost, if not quite pure, and a moment afterward he ran to the door and called to his mother. Before she could reach him he was already choking and gasping, and in his struggles must have swallowed a quantity of the acid. It was some minutes before a physician could be secured and he arrived only a few seconds before death ended the struggle. He did not live more than about twenty minutes after taking the acid. He was 27 years old at the time of death and had lived constantly with his mother, who has been a resident of Ionia for sixteen years, and for the past year has had charge of the Wayside Inn. They lived in rooms on the second floor over the Inn. He has never been in robust health and did not have the resistance of normal health to combat the poison. Besides his mother there survive a sister, Mrs. Gladys Briggs of Grand Rapids, and three brothers, Fred, Claude and Thornton Clark, all of this city. Mrs. Briggs is already here. An aunt, Mrs. Hatton, of Belding, and uncle, William Ward of Lowell, are expected here to attend the funeral services, which will be held at the Bradley mortuary Friday morning at 10:00 o’clock, Rev. E. E. Branch officiating. Burial in the family lot in Highland Park.
