Ionia Standard, 20 Jay 1887

Died, at the residence of her son-in-law, Gowell Proctor, in this village, on
Tuesday, May 10th, at 8 o’clock p.m., Mrs. Cynthia E. Clark, aged 70, after
years of almost utter helplessness.  She had applied for a pension, and would
have received it in a few weeks, had she lived.  The back pay would have
amounted to some $2,000, and would, in part, remunerate the friends who so
kindly smoothed her pathway to the grave.  This tardy procedure of the
department may save the government money, but there is another side to the
question which works injustice to worthy applicants, as in this case.
