The Ionia Sentinel-Standard, Saturday, May 3, 1975
A private memorial service was held May 2, 1975 in Highland Park cemetery for 
Gertrude Brock Clark who died February 3, Springvale Terrace, Silver Spring, 
Maryland.  Interment was in the family plot of her parents, the late L. Philip 
and Bertha E. Brock.

Born in Ionia in 1894, Mrs. Clark was educated in the local schools, and went 
on to receive her BA and MA degrees in history and government from the 
University of Michigan.  She was the first graduate of the Ionia high school 
to be elected to Phi Beta Kappa, the national honorary society for 
scholarships.

Her husband the late Chester Wells Clark, was a professor of history at 
Harvard university, Cambridge, Massachusetts; Princeton university, Princeton, 
New Jersey; and the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa.  They had also lived 
and traveled extensively in European countries.

Her mother is memorialized by the Bertha Brock park, located on Route 21 west 
of Ionia.  Mrs. Clarks’ great-grandparents, Elanezer and Eliza Murray, who 
were Mrs. Brock’s grandparents, were members of the group who came from New 
York state in 1832 and founded Ionia.  The family has lived in this community 
through the succeeding generations.  Her brother, Stuart Murray Brock, lived 
in the family home at 409 Union street until his death in May, 1973.

Mrs. Clark is survived by a nephew, Stuart Philip Brock of Silver Spring, 
Maryland, and two nieces, Betty Brock Harris of Owosso, and Gertrude Joan 
Brock Scheidt of Dunedin, Florida.
