Removed there a few days earlier, Clark appeared to have been stricken with spinal meningitis according the physician’s report. He was the first such case reported in Ionia county in some time. Clark complained of illness on Wednesday and his condition grew quickly worse until he was removed to Butterworth in critical condition. He died there at 11:30 p.m. Sunday. Clark was employed under civil service at the Ionia state hospital, beginning work there in 1930. He was born at Ithaca November 11, 1906 and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Clark who moved to Palo when Ray was a child of five. He attended the Palo schools and was graduated from the Palo high school which since has been discontinued. In 1932 he was married to Miss Theo French of Ionia who for many years was the secretary to Dr. Perry C. Robertson, medical superintendent of the Ionia state hospital. The have two children, Douglas Ray, 8, and Roger Allen, 5. Clark’s work at the state hospital was interrupted in 1942 when he was drafted into the armed services. He spent three years there and served as a sergeant with the 5th army in Italy winning three battle stars. He served in the medics with the field artillery. He was discharged from service in 1945. In Ionia he was a member of the F. and A.M. No 36 of the Ionia chapter and a charter member of the Ionia County Fishing and Hunting club. He was an ardent golfer and belonged to the Ionia Country club. Funeral services will be conducted from the Ionia Church of Christ Wednesday at 2 p.m. The service will be conducted by Dr. Paul L. Stewart and the Rev. Court O. Adams, pastor of the church. Interment will be at the Easton township cemetery where a Masonic graveside service will be held. Surviving besides his wife Theo and two sons Douglas and Roger are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Clark of Palo; a brother William of Hartford, a sister, Mrs. Vera Biergens of Lansing; an aunt Mrs. Fay Palmer of St. Louis and an uncle Fred Crozier of Ithaca.
