October 16, 1941 Death Takes Largest Man In Community Death removed a familiar figure to the Smyrna and Belding section of the state, when on Sunday, Harry Clark, long time Smyrna resident passed away at the hospital in Ionia at the age of 69 years. Mr.Clark was one of the largest, if not the largest, men in tis section of the state, weighing somewhat better than 300 pounds at the time of his death and having at one time weighed in the neighborhood of 425 pounds, according to his own statement given at one time to a reporter of the Banner-News. It took a special built, large casket to carry his body and eight men, all neighbors and friends of the deceased, were called to act as bearers at his funeral.The bearers were Earl and Clair Norton, Frank Gray, Earl Goodrich, Fred Dumon, Hubert Reeves, Harold Gardner and Frank Richmond. Funeral services were held at the Fitzjohn funeral home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev.H.S. Ellis officiating and burial was in the Smyrna cemetery. Surviving are the widow,Ila, of Smyrna; a son, Leland, of Nashville; a brother, Glen, of Portland, Ore., and two sisters, Mrs.Harry Beach of Cedar Springs and MRs.Elizabeth Groat of Daytona Beach,Fla. Mr.Clark followed the business of breaking and training horses for many years and was called to take care of and conquer fractious horses by their owners living a long distance away who had heard of his ability and skill in handling horses.For many years he refuse to ride in or own an automobile and struck to his love for horses but with the passing of many horses from the farm and their places being taken by tractors an cars, he finally gave up training and and secured an automobile for his own us. He was also a shearer of sheep who was in great demand during the shearing season.
