The Portland Observer, Wednesday, August 29, 1894
For some days prior to last Wednesday, John Clark, and old resident of 
Portland and for some time the local agent of the Singer sewing machine 
company, had been suffering very much pain from a kidney trouble with which he 
was afflicted.  On Wednesday he took ten cents worth of morphine pills and the 
following morning he was unconscious and remained so up to the time he died 
(except at short intervals) on Friday afternoon. 

John Clark was formerly in the blacksmith business, but on account of injury 
was obliged to give it up some years ago.  He was 51 years of age at the time 
of his death.  Besides a widow he leaves a family of children, Mrs. Bert Cole, 
Lansing, Mrs. Frank Whitman, John, Nora and Charlie of Portland to mourn his 
loss.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. C. W. Bird, of the Congregational 
church, of which deceased was a member, on Sunday afternoon last.  The burial 
was made under the auspices of the Portland fire company, of which the 
deceased had been a member since the very first organization of the company, 
upward of twenty members being in line.

For many years deceased filled the position of constable in Portland, but last 
spring he failed of re election.  It is held by some that the morphine was 
taken with suicidal intent; but whether this is true no one knows, but it is 
known that he was discouraged; that he was not doing very much business in his 
line, and that the outlook was anything but flattering.  

Bert Cole and wife of Lansing have been in Portland for a few days past, 
called here by the death of Mrs. Cole’s father, John Clark.
