Born in Rives Junction, she was a daughter of Fred and Olive Sears Smith and moved with her family in near Sunfield where she graduated from high school. She later attended the University of Michigan, Michigan State university and the University of New Mexico. She married Darwin Clay, May 10, 1921, and the couple moved to New Mexico where they made their home for three years. They then returned to Michigan where Mr Clay was named superintendent of schools at Leslie. In 1942, he accepted a position with the State of Michigan and became the director of Education at the Ionia reformatory until he retired in 1960.He preceded her in death on June 1, 1970. Mrs. Clay taught elementary school in Ionia and later worked as an abstract clerk in the Ionia County Register of Deeds office. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Mother's Study Club, and Literary Club. She is survived by one daughter Mrs.John (Patricia) Marquis of Palo Alto, Cal. three grandchildren, and a sister Mrs.Raymond (Meredith) Hetrick of Kalamazoo. Services will be 2 pm Thursday from Leddick Funeral Home, with Rev. Carl Hausserman of the First United Methodist church officiating. A memorial fund has been established for the Crippled Children's Society and contributions may be left at the funeral home. The family will be at the funeral home to receive friends and relatives Tuesday and Wednesday from 7 pm to 9 pm and Wednesday from 2 pm to 4 p. Burial is in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
