He was born in Greenville, Michigan, on April 11, 1945, the son of Claude Lewis and Hazel Adella (Myers) Clayton. James attended Belding Area Schools, and after completing his education, became employed in manufacturing. He worked at several area foundries and moved to Ohio for work for a time, where he met his wife-to-be, Judy Lynn Musselman. The couple married on January 18, 1969, in Lima Ohio and she survives. Jim, as he was known by his friends, was an avid card player, sitting down as often as he could to play Texas Hold ‘Em and other poker games. He also enjoyed a trip to the casino, and loved to go fishing. In addition to his dear wife, Jim is survived by his mother-in-law Anna Lee Condon of Cridersville, Ohio; children Claudia Ann (Bill) Clayton-Wall of Muir, Lynette Suzanne (Jeff) Clayton-Graham of Ionia and Danny Joe Clayton of Ionia; grandchildren Bradley, Stephanie, Tyler and Ryan; a brother Gerald Clayton of Stanton; a step-sister, Suzie Smith; half-sisters Michelle Carrozza and Lynne Sloan; many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends, including special friends Bill & Shirley Stoddard, Dennis & Ann Ward and John Sowers. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son James Samuel, a brother Kenneth Clayton and two sisters, Bonnie Horsfall and his dear twin sister, Jayne Perez. A memorial service will take place on Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at 1 p.m., at Verdun Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 303 S. Bridge Street, Belding, with Reverend Robert “Butch” Roush, officiating. The family will greet visitors at the funeral home beginning at 12 noon. The family recommends memorial contributions in Jim’s memory be made to the American Heart Association. Envelopes will be available at the service or by contacting Verdun Family Funeral Home, 303 S. Bridge St., Belding, who is caring for the arrangements.
