Feb. 24, 2016 ARLENE MAMIE BELCHER CLENDENING Arlene Mamie Belcher Clendening was born Feb. 7, 1921 in Berlin township to Fred and Mary Bradt Belcher. She graduated from I.H.S. in 1939. She attended central Michigan University where she met her husband of 55 years. Arlene taught 3 years during World War II in rural schools of Berlin township. She married Lawrence (Bill) Clendening on May 7, 1944. He died in 1999. An avid rock hound, she and her husband belonged to the Grand Alley rock and Mineral Society a number of years, and exhibited at rock shows and the Ionia Free Fair. She loved flowers and won many ribbons at the fair in Ionia. Arlene loved to travel in the mountains and the forests, and enjoyed a yearly trip to the Upper Peninsula and Mackinac Island. She loved christian, country and band music. Arlene never cared for crowds, but did enjoy tractor and steam engine shows and flea markets. Unlike most people, she did not are much for TV or movies. Movies had to be old time ones or educational. She loved being out-side working in her yard and enjoying her pet lambs, goats and rabbits. She was interested in butterflies and humming birds. Arlene loved poetry and studying maps. She was an active, independent person who seldom expected help with her work. She as always a fast worker. Her one concern, at present is the she feels that young people spend too much time on the Internet and playing videos and too little time on academics. She always cared and was concerned about her family, friends and neighbors. Arlene is survived by a son, Dan, of Ionia; daughter Kathy (Art) Raby of Orleans; and three grandchildren, Kevin, Don and Lisa (Bills) Parks. She has eight great-grandchildren, Megan, Alicia, Alex, Jacob, Bandon, Caleigh, Payton and Elliot. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bill (Lawrence), son (Shawn), and one great-granddaughter (Sophie). Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26 at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia. Visitation will be on Friday from noon until the time of services.
