She was born in Ionia, the daughter of Bert and Bess (Settle) Stone. Mildred Stone Cloud was raised on the family farm located on Westbrook Road in Ionia. She attended the Presbyterian church in Muir, with her parents Bert and Bess Stone and her brother Truman. Her husband, Bob, was raised in Midland, Michigan where he attended the Lutheran Church with his parents and siblings. Millie and Bob met during World War II. He was an Army medic at Fort Custer while she served as a WAC medic at the Percy Jones Hospital, both located in Battle Creek, Michigan. They were married in 1946 at the Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek. After their tour duty with the military, they moved to the Stone family farm in Ionia. Bob eventually took over ownership of the farm. Over the years, they became the proud parents of three sons. Robert (Bob), their eldest son, is working for the Rockford Public Schools near Grand Rapids. He makes his home in Greenville, Michigan . Their second son (David) is an insurance consultant and lives in Houston, Texas with his wife Sharon. Son number three (Phil) and wife Nancy are now the fifth generation to work the family farm established in 1846. Mildred is a retired schoolteacher. She first attended the County Normal School then furthered her education at Western Michigan University. She received her masters degree plus thirty hours at Michigan State University. Mildred began her teaching career in one-room schools. Her first position was at Stone School near the family farm. Later she taught at another one-room school on Haynor Road. She went on to teach elementary grades for Ionia Public Schools. After spending a lifetime in the classroom, it was time to retire, but not completely. For the last eighteen years she has worked as a substitute teacher in Ionia . She is currently a member of the Citizen Advisory committee for Ionia Public Schools. Mildred devoted a good deal of her time in service for her church. She was the Sunday School Superintendent for many years and was elected to serve as an Elder for two terms, a total of six years. She has truly been a good and faithful servant. She is survived by sons; Robert Cloud Jr. of Greenville, David and Sharon Cloud of Houston Texas, and Phil and Nancy Cloud of Ionia; granddaughter April and Ron Ruiz of Dewitt and 3 great granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her husband , brother Truman Stone and sister in law Edna Stone. Throughout her life, Mildred has received many honors, including the Silver Slate Award from Ionia Public Schools and The Children's Study Club Award. Her name can be seen in the 2000 Book of Who's Who as an educator and a business woman. She is also honored as a charter member of the Women's Army Corp Memorial at the Arlington Cemetery in Washington, D.C. Mildred was proud of her political affiliations and being the chairman of the Ionia County Republican Party at one point. Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Ionia with Pastor Judith Shaver officiating.
