Clute, 83, former Hudson riverboat owner and captain, died Tuesday, April 21, at 8 a.m. at the Ionia Convalescent Home where he had been a patient since September 1951. He was born June 27, 1869, on the Clute farmhome on M-66, one of five children of Lemuel and Ellen Clute. Clute went to New York City at an early age and operated three delicatessens there. He also owned and was captain of his own boat out of New York harbor, and on the Hudson river. He returned to Ionia in the late 1920's and lived on State road in the old Clute homestead until he was taken ill in September 1951. He was a member of the First Methodist church of Ionia and a graduate of the Ionia high school in 1886. Surviving are a brother, Monroe, of New York City and a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Richard C. Clute, Jr., of Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y. His only son, Richard Jr., died in January, 1953. Funeral services will be conducted at the Boynton funeral home Thursday at 2 p.m. Interment will be in the family lot, Highland Park cemetery.
