Esther Mary Schwab Coates, aged 88, of Ionia, passed away Jan. 11, 2009.  She 
was born Sept. 2, 1920, in Clarksville the daughter of Charles and Rose 
Schwab.  Esther attended Clarksville High School, graduation in 1937.  She 
loved playing girls basketball throughout her high school years when her team 
won the State Championship.  

In her early years the family attended the Elmdale Nazarene Church.  In her 
later years Esther and Bill joined the Nazarene Church of Ionia.  Her lord and 
her church were important to her.  She married William J. Coates in Ionia on 
Dec. 12, 1940.  They had 60 beautiful and devoted years together when Bill 
passed away June 12, 2000.  Esther was employed at the Ionia Reformatory as 
the receptionist for 33 years before retiring to travel and raise blue ribbon 
roses.

She is survived by her brother Samuel of Ft. Myers, Fla. and a sister Margaret 
Olinsky of Spring Lake, Mich. and many nieces and nephews who she loved 
dearly.  She was preceded in death by her sister Evelyn Beatty and brothers 
Harold and Leonard Schwab.

Funeral services will be held Friday 1 p.m. at Ionia Church of Nazarene with 
Pastor Kirk Starkweather officiating.  The family will receive friends and 
relatives 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the service at the church.  In lieu of 
flowers you may make memorial contributions to the Ionia Area Hospice or the 
Ionia Church of Nazarene.
