Former Banner Publisher Drops Dead

Word was received in this city a few days ago telling of the instant death of
Jesse K. Coates, aged 64 years, on the streets of Constantine, this state, early
last week, Mr. Coates having dropped dead while crossing a street in that city
to get to his car which was parked and in which he was to continue a trip which
he had started.

Mr. Coates was a former publisher of the Banner, having been in co-partnership
with James M. Langston and Ford Hicks for a time when the Banner was still
located in the rooms over the present Busk shoe store.  He was a hustler but his
energetic methods and business tactics made him more or less trouble while he
was here and made it so that eventually he sold out to his partner, Mr.
Langston, and with Mr. Hicks left for Ypsilanti where they started the Record
and published that for a time.

He was one of the best subscription solicitors in the newspaper business and
left a path of new subscribers wherever he went and was considered a successful
newspaper man by all of the various publishers who employed him.  He was working
at his solicitors work when death overtook him and he had felt bad for a few
minutes and after resting for a short time, stated that he was better and got up
and started across the street to his car.  He had reached the center of the
street when death came over him and before people who had seen him fall could
reach him he was dead.

Mr. Coates is survived by his widow and two daughters, Mrs. Bertha Hubbell, of
Detroit, and Mrs. Paul Palmiter, of Lansing.
