Harry Coates, 81, of Stanton, passed away Monday evening, April 14, 2003, at 
his home.  He was born November 13, 1921 in Ionia, the son of Elmer and Hazel 
Backhorn Coates.

Harry had retired from General Motors Corp. in Grand Rapids.  He was a member 
of the Belding Free Methodist Church.  He enjoyed working in his yard camping 
and fishing, and in earlier years ballroom dancing.  He and his wife enjoyed 
spending several winters in Florida.

He was married on November 9, 1991 in Belding to Beverly VanWagoner and she 
survives along with his children; Gary and Linda Coates of Grand Rapids, 
Bonnie and Mike Suschomiski of Tampa, Florida, his stepchildren, Roger and 
Crystal VanWagoner of Greenville; Betty and Johnny McLain of Stanton; and a 
daughter-in-law Nancy Coates of Kalamazoo; many grandchildren, many great-
grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren; his sisters and brothers and 
their spouses; Dick and Eileen Coates of Ionia, Alice and Jerry Mason of 
Belding; Marie and Edward McCarn of Vestaburg; Gordon and Barbara Coates of 
Jenison; and sister-in-law Esther Coates.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Donna Curtis; his sister 
Dorothy, his brother Bill; his son Ken and a niece.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Belding Free Methodist Church 
with Pastors Mike Childs and Byron Davey officiating.  Interment will be in 
Green Cemetery.

Visitation is today, April 16, 2003, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Johnson-
Feuerstein Funeral Home in Belding.  Memorial contributions may be made to 
Belding Free Methodist Church, Devos Children’s Hospital or Visiting Nurse 
Hospice.
