The Ionia Sentinel-Standard, Monday, December 23, 1991


Hazel Elizabeth Coates, 94, of Orleans Township died Saturday at Belding 
Christian Nursing Home.  She was born September 1, 1897 in Muskegon, the 
daughter of Harvey and Melvina Gates Beckhorn.  She married Elmer L. Coates on 
March 21, 1916 in Ionia.  He preceded her in death in 1967.

She is survived by four sons; Harry of Belding, Gordon of Jenison, and William 
and Richard of Ionia; two daughters; Ellen McCarn of Vestaburg and Alice Mason 
of Belding; 15 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and one great great 
grandchild; her sister, Mrs. Muyr Minaker of Belding; and several nieces and 
nephews.  She was preceded in death by her daughter, Dorothy Rumlor of Port 
Huron; two sisters, Jesse Beebe of Ionia and Bessie Coulson of Grand Rapids; 
her brother Frank Beckhorn of Ionia, and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cook Funeral Home with the Rev. 
Kenneth Harger officiating.  Organist will be Beverly Harger.  Burial will be 
in Balcom cemetery.  The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 
p.m. Monday.  A memorial has been established in care of the funeral home.
