Ionia Sentinel Standard, June 2000

William J. Coates, 83, of Ionia, passed away on June 12, 2000, at Spectrum 
Downtown.

He was born in Ionia, the son of Elmer and Hazel (Beckhorn) Coates on Dec. 25, 
1916.  He was a member of the V.F.W. in Ionia.  He retired from being a rural 
mail carrier after 21 years.  He served in the Air Force during World War II in 
Alaska.  He married Esther Schwab on Dec. 12, 1940, in Ionia.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three brothers, Richard (Aileen) Coates of 
Ionia, Harry (Beverly) Coates of Stanton, Gordon (Barbara) Coates of Grand 
Rapids; two sisters, Marie (Edward) McCarn of Vestaburg, Alice (Gerald) Mason 
of Belding; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by one 
sister, Dorothy and one niece, Rosie.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday at the Church of the Nazarene 
in Ionia with Rev. Kirk Starkweather officiating.  Interment Balcom Cemetery.  
Visitation will be held at 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday 
at the Lake Funeral Home in Ionia.  Anyone wishing may make contributions to 
the Ionia Church of the Nazarene building fund or charity of your choice.
