Ionia Shopper's Guide -Sat. November 25, 2023

            COLE

Wayne Keith Cole, age 79 of Ionia passed away November 16, 2023. He was born 
January 10, 1944 in Ionia, Michigan the son of Ralph and Mildred (Evans) Cole. 
Wayne was the fifth of six children. 

Preceding him in death are his parents, sisters Kathryn and Gayla and his 
brother Larry.

Wayne married the love of his life Kathryn McCarroll "Kitty" May 14th, 1966 at 
SS.Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ionia and spent 57 years united together.

Surviving are his children; JoLynn Cole of Mattawan and Kenneth (Shasta) Cole of 
Ionia.

Wayne was employed with the Ionia County Road Commission for 43 years. He served
the Road Commission proudly, working in several positions from flagman, tree 
crew, plowing many roads throughout the county and the gravel pit. Wayne held 
the loader operations position for 32 years.

He was a Vietnam Veteran proudly serving his Country after being drafted to the 
US Army from 1967 to 1968. Wayne hauled supplies to the Air Force Base and 
Artillery along the Cambodian Border.The Road commission held his job and 
seniority when he was called to serve.Wayne returned to his job within days of 
returning home from the service.

He enjoyed his Family, NASCAR races and watching the Detroit Lions. Wayne was 
loved and respected by many and will be sadly missed.

Memorial services with Military Honors were at the Lake Funeral Home in Ionia on 
Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. with a visitation an hour prior to 
services. Those wishing may make memorial contributions to Ionia County Animal 
Shelter or St. Jude Children's Hospital.Online condolences may be made at
