He was the youngest of a family of seven children all of whom have preceded him. When about three years old his parents moved to New York state, coming to Michigan eight years later. He spent his young manhood on a farm in the township of Ada, where he was married in 1864 to Amelia E. Richards, who passed away February 12, 1897, to them were born three children Gaylord who died at two years, Ernest and Anna who still remain. In 1866 they moved to Campbell township living for three years on what is now known as the Scovill farm. They then purchased the farm in South Boston where he resided until his death. A kind husband and indulgent father he was loved most by those who knew him best.
