Dyer was born July 8, 1852, in Mile, Yates Co., New York, and was one of two children, having a brother two years younger than she. When three years old, she came with her parents to Michigan, settling at Troy Corners, Oakland Co. They lived at Detroit, Jackson, and many other towns, finally settling at Ionia about 1872. When 23 years old, she was married to Wm. H. Bentley. Their first home was on a farm in Ronald, but later they moved into this city. Mr. Bentley died here in March, 1894, and she then made a home for her father, for whom she cared until a year previous to his death, when she was stricken with nervous prostration, from which she never fully recovered. Mr. Dyer, her father, died July 17, 1901. Her health later somewhat improved, and June 17, 1903, she was married to C. W. Colton, to whom she was a loving companion and cheerful helpmeet. Her health seemed to improve until October last, when she was taken down again and was a patient sufferer until God claimed her as one of his children August 1, 1907. Mrs. Colton was a woman of more than ordinary personal attractions, and her lovable qualities attached to her many friends, who deeply mourn her loss. She was a spiritualist in belief, and found consolation in the assurances of a future life on a higher plane, in her faith. The funeral service was held Saturday afternoon, Aug. 3, at her late home on North Jefferson street. Mrs. Dorothy Newton of Kalamazoo was the speaker. There was a large company of friends at the funeral and the floral tributes showed the sympathy and high esteem in which deceased was held. Friends and relatives in attendance from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Wm. D. Dyer, Mrs. Emma Packard and daughter, and Mrs. Mina Hall of Stanton; Mr. and Mrs. Jas. K. Bentley, Grand Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Traynor and three sons of Orleans; and Mrs. Hattie L. Painter of Lowell. The pallbearers were Scott Leach, Jos. VanSickle, Ed. Thompson, and Victor Wheaton. Interment in Highland Park. Card of Thanks: We wish to thank the friends and neighbors for their any kindnesses shown us during the sickness and at death of our loved one. Also for the beautiful floral tributes. C. W. Colton Wm.
