The Ionia Standard, Friday, July 4, 1906


Daniel E. Combs was born in Florida, New York, Jan. 12, 1840, and died at his 
home in Berlin, June 29, 1906, at the age of 66 years and 6 months.  

He came to Michigan in the early sixties and located in Lenawee county, where, 
June 12, 1872, he was married to Miss Mary Farmer.  To this union were born 
three daughters: Minnie D., Nellie M. and Hattie E.  Minnie, now the wife of 
Frank Galloway this city; Hattie, the wife of Norman Galloway, Berlin, and one 
grandson with the widow, remain to mourn his loss.  There also survive: of his 
father’s family, one brother and four sisters.

He was a kind husband and an indulgent father, always doing his best for those 
he loved.  He was of a quiet nature, never sought public gain, but generous to 
a fault.  No one ever went from his door hungry, no matter what his or her 
station in life might be.  Always acting n the principle of the scriptural 
passage “As ye have done it unto the least of one of these, so have ye done 
unto me.”

The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. D. H. Shelly, Sunday, at the 
Wesleyan church in Berlin; interment in Balcom cemetery.

Lansing; Mr. and Mrs. S. W. Smith, Grand Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. F. Fynn, Lake 
Odessa; Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Bosworth, Vermontville; Mr. and Mrs. Orin Jones and 
Mrs. S. Heefer, Collins; Mrs. Albert Dreyopple, St. Louis, Mich.; Wm. Combs, 
Chicago; Wm. Dorenburg and daughter, and Mrs. Murdo Webber, Muir.
