Oct. 17, 2013 Belding- Arthur M. Compton, 96, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013, at Metron of Belding while in the care of many angels. Art was born March 29, 1917, to Gertrude (Whitaker) and Arthur M. Compton in Davenport, Iowa. He is survived by five children, daughter, Kate and her husband, Roger Mason of Michigan, daughter, Carolyn Compton of Texas, son, Charles and his wife, Aileen Thompson of England, daughter, Veronica Thompson of California, and son Josh and his wife, Bernie Thompson of Australia; sister-in-law and husband, Elizabeth and David Randall of England; his grandchildren, Meg "rinky-dink" and her husband, Kevin Wheeler, Stephanie "yankee-doo-doo" Clarkin, Chad, Bredt Mason of Michigan, Camilla Thompson, Alison Thompson, Sarah Thompson and Scott Thompson all of England, Shane Thompson and Christopher Thompson of Australia. And, let's not forget the great-grandchildren, Alexandra, Aiden, Isabella, Nikita and Meghan of Michigan, Oliver, Max, Kohen and Izabelle of Australia; nieces, Anne and Elizabeth of Iowa and nephew, Tom of Colorado. Art was preceded in death by his parents; his sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Walter Balzer; Kate's mother, Nancy Compton and Carolyn's mother, Alison Compton. A graduate of Grinnell College in Iowa and Cal Tech in California with engineering degrees, he was a lifelong researcher. Much of that research was relayed to the public in his many guest editorial columns in the Daily News. Anywhere from the "Harbinger of Spring" printed many years ago, to the last written in 2011 relating the story of his father stepping into a gopher hole, he never failed to make us smile or provoke thought. He was a life long athlete, swimming and lifting weights into his 90's. He did bench press with Barb's (his wonderful caregiver" watchful eye until entering Metron in July of 2011. Some of our fondest memories as his children and grandchildren are walks to the drug store for a Bun candy bar, playing horsey, swimming and tennis lessons with Daddy/Grandpa as coach, trips to the Belding Library, hot "sludge" sundaes at Herald's and Sunday morning pancakes. A memorial celebration will be held at Kate's house on Oct. 26 in the afternoon. If you wish, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice in memory of Art. Envelopes will be available at Kate's house or at Johnson -Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding, where cremation services have been entrusted. Messages of condolences may be given at www.jffh.com.
