Aug. 18, 2018 SOUTHFIELD, MI. -Harold Edwin Compton was born at home on September 20, 1926 in Danby township, Ionia County. He was the son of Charles Jackson Compton and Mary Figg. He was a sibling to three brothers and one sister. After completing the eight grade at the Compton School, Harold attended Portland High School until 1944 before joining the Army in 1945, serving until 1948. Later he went back to school and graduated with his son, Charles. Growing up he assisted his father in the operation of an 80 acre farm, raising grains, hay, beef and dairy cattle, hogs and chickens. He was handy at repairing farm machinery. He retired from road construction as an operation engineer. On June 25, 1949 Harold married the love of his life, Marilyn Joyce Swiler at the Methodist church in Portland, and together they raised two daughters and one son. Marilyn passed away January 29, 2015. They had been married 65 years when she passed. Harold would often find his way to a steam engine show along the route of the many miles he and his wife traveled over the years. They would make new friends wherever they would go. When not traveling, they would spend time at their family cottage on Saddlebag Lake in lake Odessa. They would often be joined by family and friends whom they loved to entertain. Harold had a wonderful sense of humor and he loved to eat pie. He often said there were only two kinds of pie that he liked-hot or cold. Harold was a member of the First Families of Ionia County Society, Dearborn Small Engine Club, Michigan Depression Glass club, The Order of he Eastern Star and the Mulliken masonic Lodge. Surviving Harold are his children, Kathryn (David) Sled of Ontario, Canada; Charles Compton of Southfield and Denise Herriges of Southfield; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Dale (Janet) Swiler; several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends who mourn his passing. He was predeceased by his wife; his great grandson; his parents; siblings; one brother-in-law, and two sisters-in-law. Cremation has taken place. there will be no funeral service per Harold"s request. Private graveside committal service will be held at Danby Cemetery at a future date.
