Funeral services for Stanley (Sam) Conklin, aged 87 years, who died at the Home for the Aged, at Grand Rapids, Monday noon, were held at St. Joseph’s Catholic church in this city Wednesday morning at 8 o’clock, with Rev. Fr. Ralph Kelly officiating and following a prayer service at the Hall and Cichy funeral home at 7:45. Burial was in St. Joseph’s cemetery here. Mr. Conklin was born at Ann Arbor, on October 2, 1856, and as a young man, after his marriage to Miss Elizabeth Kerns, at Ann Arbor, with his wife, he took up his residence on a farm neat Trufant where he resided for some time. Mrs. Conklin preceded him in death 36 years ago. For many years he was a resident of western states, living for a long time near Hettinger, S. D., and also for a number of years at Thermopolis, Wy. Nine years ago he came to this city, where, for a time he made his home with his two daughters and later on taking up his residence in what is now the Edmund Quillan home on Fair street. Three years ago, with his health failing, he went to the Home for the Aged at Grand Rapids, where he had been given every care and attention by the Catholic sisters who conduct that institution. For the past year he had been compelled to use a wheel chair. Two years ago Mr. Conklin asked to be allowed to become a member of the Catholic church and the consolations of his faith gave him strong courage and he looked forward eagerly to the fulfillment of the promises of the Redeemer. Surviving are two daughters; Mrs. Mae Thomas and Mrs. Ed. D. Engemann, Sr., both of this city; also six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
