Connell. Mrs. Connell was born July 24, 1840, at Toledo, Ohio, her maiden name being Mary Jane Clarkston. When a small child her parents moved to Mt. Morris, N. Y., at which place July 3d, 1861 she was united in marriage to the husband who survives her. In 1871 they came to Michigan locating first at Lowell where they remained one year, afterwards at Greenville for seven years then coming to Belding, where there have since resided, a period of sixteen years. Six children have been born to them, five sons and one daughter, two of the boys dying in early youth. The eldest remaining son being Harry J. Connell, Belding’s present postmaster, and also junior member of the firm of Holmes & Connell. The deceased was a member of the Episcopal Church and the funeral services which took place from the Congregational church Wednesday at 1 o’clock p.m. were conducted by Rev. Cyrus Mendenhall, chaplain of the Ionia S. H. of C., a clergyman of that denomination, assisted by Rev. B. V. Child of Belding. A profusion of the most beautiful floral emblems covered the casket, with their sweet incense resembling her life, sweet, pure and lovely. The remains were most tenderly laid away to the well earned rest in the River Ridge cemetery. Mrs. Connell had been an invalid for the past eight years but instead of making it a tax upon those whose duty it was to care for her, her infirmities seemed to bind them the closer, and she indeed reaped a bountiful harvest for the tender and loving recollections will live on in the hearts of those who knew her while life lasts. There were present at the last sad rites besides the family here, a brother and sister, Wm. Clarkston, and Mrs. Frank LaRue both from Mt. Morris N. Y.
