The youth was Earl Adgate, son of Supervisor “Chet” Adgate of Berlin, who had gone up to see about the delivery of some wood, for which he had contracted. Mr. Lampkin and one or two others went immediately to the office, where they found the doctor lying on the floor of the wood room. He had apparently fallen backward in the restricted space, his head striking the table leg, leaving a spot of blood on one ear, but showing no serious wound or contusion. The body was raised and placed on the couch. It was still warm, but there was no evidence of life. Dr. Allen was sent for, and was on the scene in a few moments, and later Dr. Tremayne came. They pronounced him dead, probably about half an hour before discovery, and that the cause of death was probably heart disease. Decedent had spoken to Dr. Tremayne about difficulty with his heart, and also to others, saying that he expected to pass away suddenly. Coroner Cook was notified and directed Deputy Sheriff Grant to impanel a jury. The following were called on to serve: W. L. Carpenter, Wm. Coates, B. R. Covert, W. T. Smith, Hugo Schmucker, J. H. Dillenbeck. The jury viewed the body, and adjourned to tomorrow morning at 10. Funeral Director Allured was notified and the remains were taken to residence on Lafayette Street. Dr. Conner was a well qualified practitioner, and a genial companion universally liked. He saw service in the Great War, and was a member of Borden post. He was also a member of Royal Arcanum, carrying a certificate for $3,000. It is also said that he had an insurance of $1,000 in National of Vermont. The Doctor had been a resident of Ionia about 20 years, coming here from Belding, where he practiced about ten years. He leaves four daughters; Jennie, Leona, Nancy and Grace. His wife died fifteen or sixteen year ago. For the past four or five years, he had been city physician. He was a man without suspicion of dishonor, simple and unaffected in manner, and true in his social relations; and in his death a good citizen is lost to the community.
