The Ionia Sentinel-Standard, Thursday, March 6, 1980
Mary Virginia (Howell) Conner, 57, who served 12 years at school psychologist 
for the Ionia County Intermediate School District, died Tuesday at the Ionia 
County Memorial Hospital.  Mrs. Conner lived at 908 W. Fargo Street, Ionia.

She was born July 12, 1922 in Abingdon, Va., the daughter of Samuel and 
Lucille (Grant) Howell.  Her early life was spent in the Philippine Islands, 
and later in Washington, D.C.  She received her BA and MA degrees from George 
Washington University, and served as a research psychologist for the 
Department of Health, Education and Welfare until her marriage in 1948.

She married Thomas Conner May 29, 1948 in Washington, D.C. and moved to Ionia 
in 1949.  She did postgraduate work at Michigan State University and Western 
Michigan University, and served with the ISD from 1961 to 1973.  Mrs. Conner 
was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ionia, the American 
Psychological Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, Beta Sigma Phi, the Ionia 
Women’s Literary Club and the Yellow Rose Hospital Guild.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas Conner; one daughter, Mrs. Steven 
(Karen) Zdon of Grand Rapids; one son, Stephen Conner of Ionia; one brother, 
Lt. Col. James Howell (retired) of Springfield, Va. and two granddaughters.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church 
with the Rev. Carl Hausermann officiating.  Burial will be in Balcom 
Cemetery.  Friends may call on the family at the Myers-Roetman Funeral Home 
Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.  A memorial fund for the Cancer Society or the 
First United Methodist Church has been established.
