Was Lincoln Guard Well Known Hereabouts As Grower Of Small Fruit Frank Conner, 83, aged civil war veteran of Muir died last Sunday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George West who lives just north of town, after a long illness. Funeral services were held from the late residence Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. Mr. Conner was a guard at the bier of Abraham Lincoln when the martyred president was assassinated. He was stationed at Washington at the time in the veterans reserve corp and was one of the first of the military to reach the scene of the shooting. Mr. Conner was a member of the Sixth Michigan heavy artillery, having seen much active service in the south. He was stricken with fever while there and later invalided to Washington as unfit for active service. It was at this time he was stationed at Washington. He was discharged from the service in 1865 and came to Muir where he engaged in farming. He has owned several farms in this territory and was well known as a grower of fruits. He was married to Miss Mary Greenhoe in 1871 and is survived by Mrs. Conner. He also leaves seven children, Mrs. Nettie McGlinchey, Mrs. George West, Harry Conner, and Mrs. William Dennis, of Muir; Mrs. Glenn Sayers of Lansing; Mrs. Fred Evans of Detroit and Mrs. Glenn MacLaren of Grand Rapids. He also leaves 18 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
