Mrs. Katrina Miller-Cook, wife of Ellis Cook, prominent Lyons township farmer and president of the People’s Mutual Fire Insurance company of Ionia, Montcalm and Clinton counties, died suddenly in St. Lawrence hospital at Lansing, Wednesday, November 23, where she had been taken a few days previous to undergo an operation for cancer of the liver. The body was brought back to the home in Lyons township and funeral services were held Saturday morning from St. Joseph’s Catholic church, Pewamo. Interment was made in Mount Calvary cemetery, one mile south of that village. The services at the church were marked with solemn Requiem High Mass, the pastor, Rev. Fr. Charles R. Uhlenberg, celebrant; Rev. Fr. Flannagan, Hubbardston, deacon; Rev. Fr. O’Rourke, Portland, sub-deacon; Norbert Schafer, master of ceremonies. It was one of the largest funerals ever held from the church, relatives and friends coming from every part of the state to pay the last tribute to one whose life had been characterized with tenderness and affection. In his funeral discourse, Rev. Fr. Ulenberg paid a beautiful tribute to the life of Mrs. Cook; of her faithful attendance, her pure Christian character, using her life for his text, “Heaven as a Goal for Every Christian.” Mrs. Cook leaves five children besides the husband to mourn her loss: Frances, Bernard, Rita, Mary Ann and Frederick, all at home. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Miller, being born in Dallas township, Clinton county, on January 4, 1882. Had she lived until her next birthday she would have been 46 years of age. Mr. and Mrs. Cook were married at Westphalia January 26, 1909. Immediately following their marriage they went to live on the farm of the groom on the Lyons-Pewamo road, half way between these two villages in Lyons township. Although in failing health for some time previous to her demise, it was not until about the first of October that she was forced to take to her bed. As she continued to grow worse an operation was decided upon, from which she failed to rally. The bereaved family have the deep sympathy of the entire township in this great loss they have been called upon to bear. The union of Mr. and Mrs. Cook was ideal. The beautiful farm home in Lyons township reveals the splendid manner in which they worked in harmony and love to build, and there is not a single thing around the home that does not give mute testimony to her years of loving wifehood and motherhood.
