Friends and relatives of Jay Cooley were saddened to learn of his sudden death which occurred Friday night at 7:30 o’clock. Although Mr. Cooley had been in poor health for several years he was not considered to be in a dangerous condition. He was out and around the yard as usual the day before and it is thought perhaps that the extreme heat might have had something to do with his death. Mr. Cooley was well-known and highly respected in this city, having lived in the community nearly all his life. George Jay Cooley was born in Otisco township, Ionia county, October 3, 1850, the son of George and Caroline Cooley, and died at his home, 211 E. Liberty street Friday, July 1. He lived for sixty years on the farm where he was born, living for several years in the old log house. Sixteen years ago he moved to Belding. He was married November 11, 1873 to Maggie Emmons, of Grattan, Kent County. She passed away June 28, 1880, leaving one son, Owen M. Cooley, now of Chicago. In 1883, Mr. Cooley married Louise A. Bowman, of Oakfield township, Kent county. Two daughters were born to this union, Mrs. Lawrence Goodale, of Lincoln, Nebraska and Miss Elsie Cooley, of this city. There are two grandsons, Geo. C. Goodale and Robert Owen Cooley. Mr. Cooley had one brother, Mel A. Cooley and one sister, Amelia Cooley, both of whom passed away a few years ago. Mr. Cooley was a kind and loving husband and father. A man who was respected by all who knew him. He was very energetic. His greatest regret during the later part of his life was not being able to do many of the things he wished to about his home. As a neighbor he was much beloved and the acquaintanceship of years only served to strengthen the affection. When a man of his sterling qualities passes on he is missed not only by his own family circle but by all who knew him. Funeral services were held at the home, 211 E. Liberty street Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock in charge of Bruce G. Fales. Rev. H. S. Ellis officiated, with interment at Otisco cemetery.
