Her parents moved to Michigan during her girlhood, and after completing her education at Willoughby college, while residing with relatives in Ohio and teaching a short while in that state, she joined her parents in Michigan where she taught for several years prior to her marriage to William C. Hawley. Of this union four children were born – Emma, the oldest child, died in childhood. Those remaining are Corinne Hawley Abney of Kansas City, Mo., Walter M. Hawley of Grand Rapids, Mich., Jessie Louise Bradley of St. Louis, Mo., Miss Louise Abney, a granddaughter, and a step-son, Wm. C. Hawley of this place. Owing to adverse circumstances after her marriage Mrs. Hawley resumed teaching in the Lyons school and taught for a number of years, always gaining the love and confidence of her pupils and making lifelong friends of them. A few years after the death of her husband in 1889, she went to Kansas City, Mo., to make her home with her children. Her entire life was spent in devotion to her Lord and humanity. She was always prominent in her home church in Lyons, and after going to Kansas City, where she united with Bates Baptist church, she spent seven years in loving, loyal missionary work in East Bottoms where she was known as “the angel of the valley.” In 1893 she married Major John Coon, and several years after her marriage to him she came back to Lyons to reside with and care for her sister, Mrs. L. M. Barnard. Major Coon passed away in Lyons thirteen years ago. Mrs. Coon continued to live with Mrs. Barnard until August, 1918, when both came to Kansas City to make their home with Mrs. Abney. Death came Friday, January 6th, 1922, while she was visiting at the home of her daughter, Mrs. G. E. Bradley, in St. Louis. Her life was one of unselfish devotion and willing sacrifice to her dear ones and friends, and all who knew her can testify to her sweet but unswerving adherence to a conscience in perfect accord with her Master’s. The many and beautiful floral tributes and great congregation of friends who gathered to pay their last respects at her funeral in her Kansas City home bespoke the love and esteem in which she was held.
