Dec.13, 2016 EDWARD THOMPSON COON 1924-2016 Edward Thompson Coon, 92, faithful husband, wonderful father, brother and friend died Nov. 29, 2016 in an assisted living facility in Miami, Fl. Edward Coon was born in Ionia, Michigan, on Oct. 10, 1924 to Raymond F. Coon and Marion Thompson Coon where he spent the first 18 years of his life. He graduated from Ionia High School in 1942. Ed met and married the love of his life, Betty Jane Welker, at a birthday party when 4 years old. They married in 1947 and were happily married for 52 years, until Betty preceded him in death in 1999. Ed entered the U.S. Navy Flight training program in 1943 and graduated in 1944. He graduated from Michigan State University in 1948 with a degree in Forestry. Ed and Betty moved to Midland, MI and joined Dow Chemical Company in February 1950. He worked in Domestic and International Operations for 35 years, living in various international locations, Ed retired from Dow Brazil in 1985. He was an active member of the Lions Club on Sanibel Island, Fl for 25-plus years. Ed was known for his love of nature, great sense of humor, love of people and generous, selfless attitude. His hobbies were fishing, biking, reading and caring for his precious maltese, Toby. He is preceded in death by his sister, Mary Jean Blazo. He was survived by her husband Bill, of Birmingham, MI; daughter Marjorie Coon Johnston and husband John of Charlotte, NC; wife Janet of Miami, FL; grandchildren Michael and Stephen Johnston, Kira and Kaely Coon. A celebration of his life will be held sometime next year on Sanibel. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mr. Coon's name to Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) or Harry Chapin food Bank of Southwest Florida.
