Ionia County News, 4 Jan 1951

George Coon, 83, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Hal Orser, West Main
St., at 10:30 Friday morning, Dec. 29, after two months illness.  He had spent
the past four months in Detroit at the home of his son, Elmer Coon, and came to
the Orser home in Ionia, Tuesday, December 27.  Death was caused by a cerebral
hemorrhage.

Mr. Coon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Coon, Ionia county pioneers, was born
November, 1867, in Orange township.  He attended the Coon school, the land for
which had been given to the district by his father.  He remained on the farm
until he was 26 years old.  In 1894 after his marriage to Miss Flora Tew, they
went to Lake Odessa where they lived for a short time.  Later they settled on
the Elmer Tew farm, south of Ionia, and lived there until they came to Ionia
about 1920 and bought the Jacoba home on West Main St.  Mrs. Coon died there in
1942 and since that time Mr. Coon lived with his children, Elmer of Detroit,
Glen of Mason, Ray and Mrs. Hal Orser of Ionia, who survive him.  He also leaves
ten grandchildren and 16 great grand children.

Mr. Coon was a member of the Evangelical U-B church.

Funeral service was held from the First Methodist church at 1:30 Monday
afternoon, New Years Day.  Rev. A.R. Kuehn officiated, assisted by Rev. Howard
Smith of the Methodist church, and burial was in Balcom cemetery.  Six grandsons
were bearers: Elmer Gordon and Richard Green, Clark Coon, Clifford Sible and
Edward [unreadable surname].

Many relatives and long time friends attended from a distance and the many
floral tributes showed the affection and esteem in which he was held.
