She was known here recently as a member of the notorious dive in the old Globe house, on Front street, which was pulled by the city marshal several weeks ago, and the inmates held for trial in Circuit court, the suit now pending and on the calendar for the May term. Her name in this role is given as Jessie Lewis. Her maiden name was Lybolt, and her parents live in Ionia township, south-east of city. She was a sister of Ida Bennett, whose name has been somewhat familiar in court circles for marked eccentricities of conduct. News of the suicide was brought here this morning, and Coroner Williams went out to investigate. The suicide took place at the residence of Benj. Hodges, in Ionia township, near Lyons village, where it appears she had been living with her husband, Samuel Cooper, to whom she was recently married. The coroner on his arrival impaneled a jury of inquest, consisting of George Cook, WM. A. Wallace, F. A. Hodgson, Cecil Goodenough, Wilbur Smith, Joshua Vincent. Susie Hodges, a girl about 15, was examined, and according to her testimony, deceased went to the home of her parents the day before, where she procured the arsenic, which she took at the Hodges home about 4 o’clock Monday afternoon. After taking the dose, she carefully washed and scalded the cup. Later, when the effects became evident, she acknowledged what she had done, and a doctor was summoned from Lyons, but he could do nothing for her, although he administered remedies. She died about midnight. The reason she gave for the deed was that Sam (her husband) “had gone back on her.” The jury adjourned until Friday, at 10 a.m., when the doctor’s testimony will be given.
