Corcoran, for many years a familiar figure on our streets, had passed on, and many expressions of regret were heard on all sides. A message received here at 1:30 this morning was sent by the chief dispatcher of the Union Pacific railroad, addressed to the local lodge of Elks, was received, but was delivered to the family home, contained the word that Mr. Corcoran had been seriously injured in an automobile accident at North Platte, Neb. Some time later a message was also received by the family to the effect and at 7:10 this morning the third message conveyed the sad news of his death. No other particulars were given other than that the fatal injury was received in an auto accident, he never regaining consciousness. Mr. Corcoran, familiarly known as “Mike” to Ionians, had been located at Sidney, Neb., for the past four years in line with his work with the Union Pacific as relief operator, which position covered the entire line of that road. Previous to going to the Union Pacific, Mr. Corcoran was connected with the Grand Trunk line, four years of which he was telegraph operator in this city and 20 years acting as traveling passenger agent, with headquarters in several cities, but was a frequent visitor to his home city. Michael Corcoran was 48 years of age, having been born September 24, 1874, and his death is the first break in the family circle of eight children, the only death in the family being that of the mother some years ago. He was a charter member of Ionia lodge No. 548, B.P.O. Elks, and also retained membership in the local camp of Modern Woodmen. John Corcoran, a brother, residing at Monroe, Mich., left this morning for North Platte to accompany the remains to Ionia, where funeral services and burial will take place, possibly early next week. Mr. Corcoran, it is said, had a peculiar aversion to automobiles and rarely was it possible to get him to take a ride in one, and that he should meet his fate through them is a strange coincidence. Mr. Corcoran had planned on spending the winter in Ionia, having written the home folks here to that effect, and expected to leave Sidney on November 1 for Ionia.
