Corey, aged 55 years, died Tuesday morning, July 19. He was the son of Peleg and Eliza Corey, born in Matherton, July 9, 1855, and the eldest of a family of nine children. Eight brothers and sisters survive him: Tola Corey, of Matherton; Mrs. Minnie Hillabrandt, of this place; James Corey of Britton, S. D.; Harry Corey, of Grand Ledge; Judson Corey and the Misses Lenna and Nellie Corey, of Lansing, and Mrs. Jennie McCarthy, of Alma. December 21, 1882, he was married in Ionia to Miss Annis Mack, of New York. They have lived on the farm west of town until about five years ago, when they moved to their home in the village. In January, 1908, he was obliged to undergo a surgical operation in the hospital at Grand Rapids. Most of the time since he has endured terrible suffering but always with patience and fortitude. During his treatment in Grand Rapids he was converted to the Christian faith, and after his return here joined the Methodist Episcopal church. The funeral was held at the church Friday, July 22, and the services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. Charles Baugham. At Mr. Corey’s special request the Hubbardstown cornet band headed the funeral procession, followed by the members of the Masonic order, of which he was a member. The Masons conducted the burial service. The remains were placed in the new family vault in the West Side cemetery. Many relatives and friends from out of town attended the funeral as follows: Mr. and Mrs. Harry Corey, of Grand Ledge; Mr. Will Mack, of Syracuse, N. Y.; Mr. and Mrs. Eli Mack, of Vickeryville; Mr. and Mrs. James McVeigh of Grand Rapids; Ford McVeigh, of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Dennis McVeigh, of Ionia; Mr. and Mrs. Samuel McVeigh and Mr. Henry McVeigh and daughter, Mrs. John Hammond, all of Portland; Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong of Muir; Mr. H. H. Aldrich and Mr. C. Chandler of Vickeryville; Mr. and Mrs. Eldridge of Carson City, Mr. Harvy Howarth, wife and daughter, Miss Mabel, of Palo; Mr. James Howarth and wife of Montana; Hugh Howarth of Lansing, and Mr. and Mrs. Mark Thomas of Palo.
