Corey, (whose shocking death caused such widespread sorrow) was attended yesterday, the services being at the First Baptist church. The remains were taken from the home where he died, under escort of the Knights Templar, 32 swords strong, under command of Capt. H. H. Hatch; Ionia Lodge I.O.O.F., with 32 in line, under command of O. C. Wright; and Ionia lodge F.&A.M., with 65 in line, under command of Jno. H. Vivian. Leading the procession was the Ionia City band. The bearers were from Ionia lodge F.&A.M., as follows: W. S. Bouk, D. C. Aclick, Thomas Rinehart, Frank L. Fox, Albert E. Jackson, Sherman Townsend, Queen Esther chapter of the O.E.S., some 35 members, under Mrs. Nantie E. Mason, were also part of the escort. The immediate mourning relatives and the escort thus filled a large section of the church, and after the spacious auditorium was thrown open to the friends, it was crowded beyond its capacity to seat. Rev. Edward M. Jeffers, pastor of the church, conducted the service at the church, and the music was by the Ladies’ quartette: Misses Kate Benedict, Hattie McMullen, Winifred Hearey, and Grace Allured, with Prof. Eugene Smith at the organ. At the grave the ritual service of the Masonic fraternity was conducted in charge of Worshipful Master I. M. Poucher. The service at the church was brief, the remarks by Rev. Jeffers being directed rather in a general way, urging proper preparation for the future life. he said he had not enjoyed but a restricted personal acquaintance with the deceased. To those who knew Mr. Corey, however, it required no stretch of the imagination to find words in praise of his splendid nature. Large-hearted and open-handed, frank and honest, he was an ideal friend. None could know him without admiring his bluff honesty, and a desire to further cultivate his acquaintance always followed. Mr. Corey was a resident of Ionia county for more than forty years, coming here when yet in his teens. His good helpmate in life, Helen L., preceded him to the better land; she died on Dec. 26, 1895. Deceased was born in New York state April 18, 1839. One son, Fred O., died Oct. 29, ’79; two children are yet alive: Mrs. Charles W. Connell, and Walter. The remains were laid beside those of his wife in Balcom cemetery.
