In the year 1833 he accompanied his father to Michigan on a prospecting tour, and in the fall of that year removed with his family to the then territory. For a year or so he lived in Grand Haven, but subsequently came to Ionia, where he had since resided, having owned and occupied the farm on which he died for forty-two years. He was a brother of the late Dr. Cornell and of Rev. Alfred Cornell, who survives him. In 1830 he was married, in the town of Richmond, Madison county, N.Y., to Miss Orpha Beckwith, who is still living. Of this union seven children were born, one of whom died in infancy. Thomas died while serving in the army during the war. Alanson lived to manhood, and died from a dose of poison taken by mistake for quinine. Four children survive, viz.: Mrs. C. H. Axtell (nee Mary Cornell), of Alma, and three sons, C.A., A.S. and E.E., all living here. Deceased lived a quiet, unostentatious and exemplary life. He was a member always in good standing of the Baptist church. He was often chosen to fill important trusts, all of which he discharged honestly and well. When Michigan was yet a territory, the acting governor, Stevens T. Mason, appointed him justice of the peace. This office he held continuously during a period of thirty years. He was county surveyor 15 years; register of deeds at least one term, and county treasurer two terms. Besides this, he served at different times as supervisor and township clerk. The funeral services were from the Baptist church, on Tuesday afternoon, the Rev. E. Campbell preaching, and the remains were interred in Riverview cemetery, James M. Kidd, Richard Dye, Sylvester Taylor and C. Oscar Thompson acting as the bearers.
