Cornell Dead Born in Ionia, the Son of a Genuine Pioneer. After an illness from pulmonary tuberculosis extending over four years, Lucien Albert Cornell passed away at 7:30 o’clock Friday morning. He was son of Dr. Alanson Cornell, one of three brothers who came to Ionia in the fall of 1833, the same year that the Dexter colony located here. Lucien was born Jan 31, 1845, and all his life he was a resident of no other place. He was for several years a partner in the dry goods business with his brother, Henry A., in the little white store on the corner of Main St. and Cornell alley, this being land early taken up by the father, and ever since retained in the family. The business was finally sold to A.S. Wright, that being the place where he commenced a very successful mercantile career, the business then established being just terminated by the retirement of the Wright Dry Goods Co. The little white store gave way six years ago to the fine red brick lately occupied by Allen Bros and known as the Racket store. After his retirement from the mercantile business, Lucien was for thirty years in the sewing machine business, devoting much time to the repairing of machines. He was a mechanical genius, and was happiest when following this natural bent. The beautiful carvings which adorn his home are the work of his hands during leisure hours, and testify to the quality of his gift in this line. He had a love for the beautiful that made him an ernest and successful cultivator of flowers, and during the last years of his active life he found his recreation largely in the home gardens. No home ever showed more devoted attention of its owner, and none, perhaps, have shown more beautiful results from such personal attention. He was married to Miss Frances Gates Jan. 2, 1868, who survives. Of the five children born to them, four are living: Mrs. D.L. VanAuken, Lansing; Mrs. W.A. Laurie, Mrs. B.L. Berry and Arthur, all of this city. His only brother, Henry A., is a resident of Woodburn, Oregon. The family were earnest Baptists, back to earliest pioneer days, and doubtless far beyond. Lucien became a member of the local Baptist church when eight years of age, and remained true and steadfast to the last. Funeral service at the home, conducted by Rev. E.E. Branch, on Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Interment, Oak Hill.
