Cornell, 85, of 630 West Lincoln avenue, died at her home late Sunday, after a sickness of two weeks. In March 1932 she fell and seriously injured herself and since then she has been confined to her home. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Freedom Gates, pioneers of Ionia county. Mrs. Cornell has lived in Ionia practically all her life, was the oldest living member of the Baptist church and always a loyal member until her fall which kept her away. She was a member of the Women’s Relief corps. She married Lucian Cornell, whose parents were Mr. and Mrs. Alanson Cornell. His uncle, Alfred Cornell, was pastor of the first Baptist church in Ionia in 1848 and again in 1865. Lucian Cornell for many years owned and operated a dry goods store in the building which he later sold to H. E. Bergy. Mrs. Cornell was survived by four children, Mrs. D. L. VanAuken and Mrs. B. L. Berry, both of Lansing, Mrs. W. A. Laurie, of Detroit, and Arthur Cornell, of Ionia, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the home. Rev. F. J. Fitch will conduct the services. The burial will be in the family lot in Oak Hill cemetery.
