Cornell, 73, of 722 North State Road, Belding, died Dec.31 in Metropolitan Hospital, Grand Rapids. He was born Aug. 11, 1918, in Belding, the son of Frederick and Mary Manns Cornell. He was a graduate of Belding High School in the Class of 1936. He retired in January 1979 as senior vice president and branch manager of the Belding Branch of Independent Bank. In a long and active career in Belding community affairs, he was a member of the Belding United Methodist Church, the Washington Club, and Belding Rotary Club, of which he was past president. He was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin School of Banking, was former treasurer of the Belding Area Development Corp, a member of the advisory committee on the Build-A-Home program at Belding Area High School, and was a member of the original board of directors of Belding Community Hospital. He was a former member of the board of Belding Area Chamber of Commerce, of the board of Belding Alumni Association, and was the local representative of the Salvation Army. He was a life member of Belding Lodge No. 355. F.&A.M., and a member of the Saladin Temple Shrine of Grand Rapids. In 1970 he received the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts, and in 1973 he received the Top Hat award from the Belding Business and Professional Women. Surviving is his wife, the former Virginia Nichoson; they were married April 16, 1944, in Belding, and a brother, F. Spencer Cornell of Donna, Texas. Preceding him in death was a sister, Frances Cornell, on Oct. 14, 1989. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Huffman Funeral Home, Belding, with the Rev. Nathaniel Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Memory Garden. The family will be at the funeral home Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Memorials for Belding United Methodist Church and Alvah N.
