He was born June 15, 1925, in St. Johns to James R. and Veronica M. (Kramer) Cotter and was a Pewamo resident his entire life. John was a parishioner at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and was active in the Knights of Columbus Pewamo Council #8071. He was a 30-year Pewamo volunteer fireman and served as a village council member. He also was a Boy Scout leader, Little League baseball coach and elementary basketball coach. He served as a Flash Observer for the U.S. Army Artillery. John had many interests including fishing, identifying birds and trees, photography, golf, local history, wine making, genealogy and card playing. A lifelong traveler, John especially enjoyed his 1983 trip to Ireland with Rose Marie. John was a general store merchant in Pewamo with his brother and father. He was the Pewamo Postmaster for 28 years until his retirement in 1987. John was preceded in death by his parents and brother, James R. Cotter. John is survived by his wife of 48 years, Rose Marie (Grace) Cotter; daughters, Gail (James) Downs of Howell and Jane (Daniel) Pung of Westphalia; and sons, Michael (Sandra) Cotter of Fowler and John (Patricia) Cotter Jr. of Lasing. He cherished his eight grandchildren: Erin and Matt Downs, Maris Cotter, Thomas and Grant Cotter, and Nick, Andy and Peri Pung. He also had 15 nieces and nephews. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Charlon O. Mason, Pastor, at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 18, 2000, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pewamo with Rite of Committal following at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Pewamo. The family will receive friends at the St. Mary’s Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia Street, Westphalia from 2 until 5 and 7 until 9 p.m. today and Friday. The rosary will be prayed at 3 and 8 p.m. today and 3 p.m. Friday. There will be a Scriptural Wake Service at 8 p.m. Friday. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Ionia Area Hospice, 117 N. Depot Street, Ionia or the St. Joseph Educational Trust Fund, in memory of John Thomas Cotter.
