Oct. 23, 2013 Belding- Gary W. Cotter, 75, of Belding, died unexpectedly Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013, at his home. Gary was born on Sept. 4, 1938, in Belding the son of Gerald L. and Gertrude L. (Rowland) Cotter. Gary graduated from Belding High School with the class of 1956. Gary worked at Belding Tool from 1961 to 1999 as a precision tool grinder, semi-retiring and retired fully in 2012. He was a lifetime member of the Belding Sportsman's Club and the American Legion Post 203. He loved hunting and fishing, playing cards and cribbage, as well as shooting trap and skeet. In earlier years, he won many titles in trap and skeet shooting and also competed and placed at the state level. On June 6, 1956, in Mississippi, he married Vera Charlene Smith, who preceded him in death in 1994. Gary is also preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Brandi L. Carlson; two brothers, Gilbert Cotter and Gordon Cotter and one sister, Jeanne DeBeaumont. Gary is loved and survived by his children, Sharon L. Carlson (Joel Palmer) of Orleans, Lorri J. (David) Brookman of Belding, Kirt W. Cotter of Fenwick; his grandchildren, Gary (Lori) Carlson, Tanya (Joseph) Carmon, Jennifer (Patrick) Robinson,, Joel Palmer III, Elizabeth Palmer, Ashley Spencer, Brent Spencer, Chris (Kristine) Mangus, Wendy (Tom) Grover, Jamie Brookman, Amber Lyn (Mike) Miller; his great-grandchildren, Chase Robinson, Boden Robinson, Carly Robinson, Crystal Jenks, Jenna Jenks, Alicia Jenks, Joel Palmer IV, Landen Scheib, Jordan Mangus, Avery Mangus, Thomas Mangus, Thomas Grover II, Amber Grover, Aubrey Grover, Devlan Miller, Jonathyn Miller; one sister, Joyce (Jim) Waller of Florida, and many nieces, nephews, and beloved friends. In keeping with Gary's wishes, cremation will take place and no funeral will be held. A time to celebrate his life will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding. Memorial contributions in Gary's name may be made to the American Legion or the Belding Sportsman's Club. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
