Splinter from Guard Rail Severs Jugular Vein as Car Leaves Road Near Grand Rapids. The 27-year sojourn at the Michigan Soldiers’ home at Grand Rapids of David Cotton, 83 years of age and a Civil war veteran, was suddenly terminated Monday afternoon when a car in which he had been taken for a pleasure ride crashed through a guard rail on the Belmont road, near Grand Rapids, and a splinter severed the veteran’s jugular vein. He was rushed to the Soldier’s home in a Rockford ambulance, but died shortly before reaching there. Mr. Cotton served during the Civil war in the Third Ohio cavalry as a member of Company K, enlisting January 13, 1864, and being discharged August 23, 1865. He later made his home at Lake Odessa for some time, going to the Soldier’s home to make his residence in 1900, and had resided there since. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Daisy Perkins, of Jackson, and a sister at Chicago. He will be buried in the cemetery at the home, with full military ritualistic services, the funeral taking place Thursday. The driver of the car, J. A. Lamoreaux, of Comstock park, was exonerated of any blame in connection with Mr. Cotton’s death. Coroner H. C. Wolfe declaring that death was clearly accidental. Two others in the car at the time it was wrecked was uninjured.
